Top 16 Golf Things We Should Thanks For-’09′

Happy Thanksgiving! As we feast on turkey for Thanksgiving, we reflect on the Top 15 things we’re thankful for from the 2009 golf season. Tiger returned from the disabled list, several young stars took their games to new heights and there is plenty to look forward to in 2010. Here’s what we’re thankful for most this year …

15.Michelle Wie finally winning her first LPGA Tour event.

14.John Daly discovering Loudmouth golf pants.
Whether you love him, like him, pity him or are simply fascinated by him, big-hitting John Daly is an interesting character and he gives us someone other than Tiger Woods to talk about. Lately, we’re thankful that he seems like he’s on the straight and narrow even if his golf game is a little crooked.

12.Y.E. Yang showing no fear against Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship.
Y.E. Yang took down Tiger at the PGA and several other players won majors who were not named Woods. Regardless, while we love seeing Tiger win, competition is good for the game, and 2009 had it.

11.Tiger Woods’s knee recovering.
Tiger Woods’ successful return from injury brought golf back from the grave. There’s a huge void when he’s gone. He brings the excitement even when he doesn’t win a major championship and throws clubs and has temper tantrums.

11.A fitting end to the FedEx Cup.

10.China having a World Golf Championship event.

Question by J W: Should I wear my golf shoes of the course? Do people normally bring a change of shoes?
I’m going golfing with my boss tomorrow for the first time. I am not sure when I should wear my golf shoes. Should they be worn only on the grass or can I wear them throughout? Should I change before and after playing?

Thanks for your help!

What Should Be in Your Golf Bag

Whether you are walking the golf course or riding in a golf cart, there are many items that you should carry in your golf bag. We will get right to it. Items to carry in your golf bag include:

Sunscreen – Just face it, no matter what part of the country that you live in, you must protect yourself against the harmful rays of the sun. Even on days that to you are not that hot. The damaging rays are still getting to your skin. I have seen fair-skinned people turn red on a cloudy day! Check with your doctor on how strong of a SPF you need to protect yourself. Sunscreen now comes in many different forms now to make it easy to carry with you and to apply during your round of golf.

Golf Hat – Your golf hat will work in conjunction with your sunscreen to protect your skin against damage from the sun. In addition, a golf hat will keep the sweat out of your eyes on the brutally hot days. Ladies a golf hat will also allow you to keep your hair out of your face whether the wind is blowing or not.

Baggie for Golf Gloves – These is an easy and cheap way to make your golf gloves last longer. Keeping your golf gloves in a baggie will keep them all in one place and with the baggie sealed your golf gloves will last longer.

Golf Training Aids – This is obviously easier to do if you are riding in a golf cart and have a cart bag or a staff bag. It also depends on the golf training aids that you are using. For example, if you are using an extra shaft to work on your turn, the weight will not bother you even if you are walking and carrying your bag. Conversely, some of the putting training aids get vary bulky and would be difficult to fit into a golf bag.

Ball Markers – If you are like me I use loose change as my ball makers. I like using the quarters of the states that I have visited. Goofy, I know but it keeps me off the streets. HAHA It always seems I need extra change around the club as well. You might collect ball markers from the golf courses that you have played and a second baggie will help keep them in one place and not damage them as well.

Golf Balls – This seems obvious that you would carry golf balls in your golf bag but you would be surprised! Also, if you are playing in a tournament with a one ball rule this becomes important. With this rule, you can not just pull the ball out of your pocket that you found on the last hole, drop it and play it. The ball you put into play after hitting a ball out of bounds or into the water must be the same type that you were playing with before. The number can be different on it but that is about it.

Again, this is a quick list of things you should carry in your golf bag. The more you play you will develop you own standards to carry in your bag as it will differ depending on the area of the country in which you reside.

Many amateur golfers spend lots of money buying new golf equipment and very little money on golf lessons. They have the impression that the new equipment will improve their golf and take their game to a whole new level. This is one of the reasons why amateurs never seem to get better. Here is why you should invest in golf lessons.

New golf equipment is very nice to have and the improvements in technology do help you to play better, but only to a certain extent.

The clubs are only the tool golfers use to play golf. The method or skill behind using the clubs effectively are entirely dependant on the golfer’s ability.

So why is it that many golfers buy new clubs rather than invest in golf lessons? I’ll tell you why. It all comes down to image. If you are seen with the latest and best golf clubs, most people assume you to be quite a good player because you look the part. That is until you swing the club. Then the truth comes out and you turn out not to be as good as you appeared to be.

This is a problem. I’m not saying don’t buy new golf clubs. Of course you must try have the best equipment available. All I am saying is that you should consider taking some lessons to get the maximum benefit and satisfaction from your clubs.

There are many different lessons you can have. They range from personal one-on-one lessons with a recognised teaching PGA Pro, or buying books and dvds that explain graphically how to play better golf.

PGA Pro’s are wonderful coaches to have as they are all pretty good players and will help you to correct your swing to play better. The only problem is that they cost a lot of money to hire and are not always available when you need them.

Instructional books and dvds are the next best thing to have. The benefits of having them are as follows. You buy them once off, they don’t cost a fortune, they provide great step-by-step instruction and are available for you to refer to whenever you need them. There are many excellent golf instructional dvds and e-books on the market today that can potentially teach you a lot more about he game of golf than any PGA Pro could and these books and dvds cover a wide range of topics to do with golf improvement.

So here is a a tip for all amateur golfers who wish to improve their game the cost effective way. Buy golf instructional dvds, e-books and training aids and after watching or reading them practice what they teach at a driving range. If you still struggle with a particular aspect of your game after that, then go visit you local PGA Pro for additional help.
