The Definitive Guide to Ladies Golfing Fashion

I was perusing Golf for Women the other day and wondered where are the women who wear the golf attire modeled in women’s golf magazines? I’ve never seen women, professionals included, who would dress in such expensive and outrageous clothes!

It’s easy to spend money outfitting yourself for golf. Hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windbreakers and shoes all add up quickly, even if you shop the sales. Add in equipment, bag and cart and you have to play quite often to keep down the “CPU” cost per use.

One glossy advertisement showed a model in short shorts (like that’s allowed on courses!) that cost 5, the Tse golf shirt (5), jacket by Ralph Lauren (5) and two-toned Utuser shoes (5).

That comes up to 80; I could never hope to get the CPU on that outfit anywhere near a normal level in my lifetime! Don’t get me wrong; I love clothes. I really love shoes, but could never afford, or want, golf shoes that cost more than the national budget of some small countries.

Granted, you want comfortable shoes that don’t look like something your grandmother would wear, but you can easily find less expensive and fashionable shoes. I have several really stylish golf outfits, none of them brand name. If I totaled the cost of all of them up it would not come up to the price of the Tse golf shirt. Personally, I’d rather have several stylish outfits and one outrageously priced one.

If I were to wear a 80 outfit to play golf, I would simply be too worried about getting dirty or perspiring to play a decent round.

In terms of picking shoes to go with the outfit the first thing to consider is that Your feet need to be comfortable! Have you ever developed a blister while walking or running? It’s all you can think about and it ruins the experience. Don’t let uncomfortable shoes ruin your golf game.

This is one area where you shouldn’t let your frugality make the decision for you. You will be wearing these shoes many times and they should be considered an investment. Comfort should be your biggest concern when buying shoes. Your foot should not move at all on your heel when you walk, yet your toes shouldn’t feel cramped. Have you shoes professional fit to your feet and walk around in them before you buy them.

Proper golf shoes should be waterproof so that your feet remain dry in damp conditions. Good socks are important too; they will wick perspiration away from you feet, keeping your feet dry and comfortable. All golf courses prohibit metal spiked shoes in the effort to protect their delicate greens. Purchase shoes that allow you to change the rubber spikes easily, and while you’re there, purchase some extras. You never know when you might lose one. Replace the spikes when they become worn.

With all the things you have to worry about while playing golf, your feet shouldn’t be one of them. When it comes to golf footwear, quality counts.

Women’s Golf Fashion: Then And Now

There have been many changes to women’s style since they were welcomed to the world of golf. From long, uncomfortable and impractical skirts, to the golf skorts and Bermuda shorts we know and love today. Here is a glimpse of ladies golf fashion over the past century or so.

When females were finally allowed on the golf course in the United States in the 1800′s, the majority of their clothing was impractical and overly stylish; it began by mimicking the street fashion of the day. At the end of the 1800′s, long skirts and fashionable blouses were worn on the golf course, as it was (and still is) seen as a social event. The length and materials of ladies golf clothing hindered their game, which slowly spurned along further changes in attire.

The turn of the century arrived with the famous Burberry pattern adorning an adjustable length skirt and matching jacket. This outfit was commonplace on the golf course for about a decade or so, but as skirts began to shorten on the streets, ladies golf fashion followed suit. Jersey material surfaced for shirts and skirts, and two piece golf dresses found their way to the market. The “Shirtmaker” was introduced during this time, and many women wore it on and off the course. It was simply a standard golf shirt sewn to a skirt.

Golf skorts finally found their way onto the green in the mid 1960′s. Though a knee-length skirt was more common, and more “proper,” the range of movement available with a skort was unmistakable. These early skorts were just above the knee, and provided female golfers with their first stepping stone of equality of attire on the course.

These days, women’s golf pants, shorts, skorts, and skirts are common, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone with knee-length golf skirts. At the turn of the century, Lycra golf and tennis dresses showed up, while Bermuda shorts, khakis and bright polo shirts made a new splash in the dress code. Stipulations for women’s golf attire as fallen away almost entirely, and the golf course is a place for men and women to find equal footing in equally comfortable and practical attire. However, it is not recommended to don your favorite blue jeans, or anything that you may also deem comfortable enough to wear while catching your nightly Z’s.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 26, 2008 — Women’s golf clothing is following a major trend seen on the runways at Fall Fashion Week – collections with metallic, print and electric colors.

That’s because women are frustrated most ladies golf apparel is not flattering and unavailable in contemporary styles. Designer and founder Tracey Blake of Tracey Lynn Golf, LLC, has launched her next line of capris, skorts, shirts, jackets and pants. Her entire line is made with athletic, self-wicking and UV protectant fabrics and appear in styles with leopard, chrome, electric blue and black.

“After seeing the 2008 spring trends at Fashion Week, I realized that I could incorporate cool styles and colors with athletic fabrics to create cute golf clothing for women,” Blake said.

Designers such as Rock & Republic, Zac Posen, Oscar de la Renta, Burberry, Roberto Cavalli and Emporio Armani established the trend of metallic and bright colors, as well.

“I was tired of seeing the same old floral prints and pastels,” Blake said. “I wanted to make women’s golf clothing that was athletic and made with performance fabrics without losing the fashion appeal of the apparel.”

The 2008 line of Tracey Lynn women’s golf clothing includes capris, skorts, sleeveless and sleeved shirts, pants, jackets and accessories to match.

“I’m creating golf clothing that is fashionable and functional for the female golfer. Whether you play three times a week or three times a season, I guarantee my clothing will have other golfers asking about your outfit and not your score,” Blake said.

Modern Day Ladies Golf Fashion

For men and women, sports attire and street fashion have always had some amount of overlap. From the long and fashionable skirts women used to wear on the golf course, the fancy dresses once worn on horseback, to the unshapely athletic shorts and tops that used to dominate the sports sections of department stores, women have always had to sacrifice either comfort or beauty for their sport.

Nowadays these issues seem to be merely problems of the past. Over the past few decades, Nike has launched one of the most successful lines of women’s active wear, and many other large manufacturing companies have followed suit. Even Victoria’s Secret now has a popular line of women’s athletic wear. Sporting companies have finally realized that fashionable active wear will sell just as well as fashionable casual wear. The biggest difference is that popular active wear items generally last much longer than popular casual wear, despite the increased exposure to weather and sweat. The sweat-wicking properties and comfortable materials make active wear a very viable option for daily wear as well.

Today, women’s golf clothing does a great job of combining style with comfort. Feminine golf attire that does not sacrifice functionality can now be found in many styles and colors. Because of the minimal movement of the sport, women were stuck wearing impractical attire for almost a century. Ladies golf pants did not find their way to the green until almost the turn of the century, and women’s golf shirts often included a tight bodice that did not allow for much movement at all.

There are many different styles of comfortable active wear for women on the golf course. Skirts, skorts, dresses, tank tops and polo shirts can be found made of Lycra as well as other wick away materials for a comfortable day-long experience. During the cooler months many women take to wearing comfortable Bermuda shorts, long pants, and lightweight tops to keep them warm. In the summer months, since the sun is stronger and it is much more likely that you will get sweaty during a long day on the course, you will generally see a rise in active wear attire for women on the course.

When it comes to social sporting events such as golf, it is important to combine fashion with functionality. Luckily, there are now comfortable and form-fitting solutions that look and feel great!

The windswept conditions at Pebble Beach changed the “script,” or storyboarded clothing plan, for many of the golfers at the U.S. Open. It turned into the Sweater Open, as the players had to pull on knitwear or thermal pullovers for most of the weekend. It was kind of a relief, stylewise, not to have to look at the usual endless sea of golf shirts over and over again. The winner, Graeme McDowell,  looked calm and collected the entire weekend. Perhaps it was no coincidence that he wore a classic, low-key Perry Como look, a buttoned-up cardigan sweater, all four days. Maybe he just lulled the rest of the field to sleep. You don’t see many cardigans on tour anymore. On Sunday McDowell matched his dove-gray sweater with a peach golf shirt, cream trousers, and white shoes — a sophisticated color harmony and not bad at all. (McDowell’s clothes come from Louis Copeland and Sons of Dublin; the golf shoes from Stuburt of Manchester, England).Other sartorial notables on the Pebble cliffs: Tiger Woods in totally beige mode for his Saturday breakout, when he wore fluid ecru trousers, a form-fitting tan sweater, and a white golf shirt. This was Woods at his most stylish. He looked very cool during his big charge. Ernie Els wore a similar look while struggling on Sunday. Taking a page out of the Gary Player book, numerous golfers wore all black on various days of the tournament, including Woods on Sunday (except for the red shirt); Ian Poulter on Saturday; Alex Cejka, who also wore a black knit watchcap from time to time; and Japanese teen phenom Kyo Ishigawa, who wore striking black-and-white plaid trousers Saturday. The kid has plenty of fashion snap to go along with his high-powered game. Phil Mickelson wore a black shirt for his final round, but the white striped trousers did not do him any favors. In the early rounds, one look was everywhere: a black sweater vest over short-sleeved white golf shirt and either gray or black trousers. A dozen players were turned out this way in the early going. It is not an outfit a guy is likely to wear in everyday life, but it is easy to see why it is a perfect fashion accommodation for seaside summer golf. The close-fitting vest keeps the body core warm but, paired with a short-sleeve golf shirt, allows for freedom of movement.

Finally, leave it to a Frenchman, the surprising No. 2 finisher Gregory Havret, to achieve a special level of sartorial ease and elegance. The guy, ranked 391st in the world, looked extremely good throughout, especially on the final day in his mélange of gray, wearing his countryman Rene Lacoste’s signature crocodile while outplaying le Tigre — and almost everyone else.
